If you drive an automatic at home, rent an automatic in Goa. A holiday is not the place to relearn a clutch. If you drive a manual at home, the answer depends on three things: where you are staying, which hills you will meet, and who else will drive. None of them is how good a driver you are.
Quick answer
Staying in Calangute, Baga or Candolim in season, sharing the driving, or heading up to the forts: automatic. Two people in a quiet village with one confident manual driver: manual is fine. The luxury cars are automatic only.
Is the Automatic Priced Differently?
The manual and automatic versions of a car are priced separately, and rates move with the season. We confirm the exact rate for your dates on the call before you pay anything, so ask for both versions and decide then. On the luxury cars there is no choice to make: the MINI Cooper, the Audis, the BMWs and the Mercedes are all automatic.
Where Are You Staying?
Calangute, Baga and Candolim in season mean a lot of stop-start on one crowded road. First gear, second, brake, first. An automatic turns that into nothing. If you are staying somewhere quiet such as Ashwem, Benaulim or Agonda, you will barely touch the clutch anyway and a manual is fine. Our peak season driving guide explains where and when the beach belt slows down.
Which Hills Will You Actually Meet?
Goa is flat along the coast and not flat once you turn inland. The climb up to Chapora fort, the lane to Fort Aguada, the Mollem ghat towards the Dudhsagar entry point and the back road from Arambol to Keri all involve hill starts. Fine if you are used to them. Miserable in a manual with a scooter right behind your bumper. This is the one people do not think about.
Who Else Is Driving?
If two of you will share the driving, take the automatic unless you are both comfortable in a manual. The car that everyone can drive is the one that gets driven, and it is also the one that means the sober person can always take the wheel home.
Two Things That Do Not Matter
Fuel. Modern small automatics are close to their manual twins on fuel, and most trips in Goa are short. Over a week the difference is small either way. Fuel is extra on every rental and the car comes back at the level it went out.
Reliability. People ask. Our automatics go out as often as the manuals and come back the same.
Which Cars Come as Automatics?
| Car | Gearbox | Our note |
|---|---|---|
| Maruti Swift | Manual or automatic | The easiest car for couples on the coast road. A small automatic pauses slightly between gears at low speed; you notice it for a day and then you do not. |
| Hyundai i20, Baleno, Glanza, Etios Liva | Manual or automatic | Same idea, a little more boot space. |
| Hyundai Venue, Creta | Manual or automatic | Higher seat, so you see over the scooters. The Creta automatic is a favourite with families staying in the Calangute belt. |
| Ertiga, Innova Crysta, Alcazar, Carens | Manual or automatic | With seven people and luggage the automatic is the calmer choice on the ghat roads. |
| Innova Hycross | Automatic only | Hybrid and the quietest car in the fleet. If you are driving grandparents around, this one. |
| Mahindra Thar | Manual or automatic | The automatic is the better car in traffic. The manual is more fun on the back roads. Pick your holiday. |
| MINI, Audi, BMW, Mercedes | Automatic only | See the luxury fleet. |

Never Driven an Automatic?
Two rules. Your left foot stays on the floor, always. And the lever goes to P before you switch off, or the car will not let you take the key. That is the entire course. Tell us at handover and we will walk you through it in the parking area, and you will be comfortable before you reach the main road.
