To rent a self drive car in Goa you need a valid driving licence, one government photo ID and the refundable security deposit, and the driver has to be 18 or older. That is the whole list: no credit card hold, no employer letter, no forms. Here is what each item means, and what we do when something is missing.
Quick answer
Driving licence (card or DigiLocker / mParivahan copy), one photo ID (Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN or passport) and the deposit, paid by UPI, card or cash at handover. Visitors on a foreign licence also need an International Driving Permit.
What Documents Do I Need to Rent a Car in Goa?
| You need | What counts | What doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| Driving licence | The original card, or the digital copy in DigiLocker or mParivahan | A photo of the card on your phone, or a learner's licence |
| One photo ID | Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN or passport | An office ID card |
| Security deposit | Refundable; the amount is told to you on the confirmation call, paid by UPI, card or cash at handover | A credit card block or a cheque |
| Age | The driver is 18 or older | No minimum years of driving are asked for |
The handover itself takes about ten minutes, and most of that is walking round the car together with a phone camera so both sides have the same record of its condition. Fuel is noted at the same time, because the car comes back at the same level it went out.
Is a DigiLocker or mParivahan Licence Accepted?
Yes. We accept a DigiLocker or mParivahan copy of your licence, and both apps pull the record straight from the transport department, which is why a screenshot of the physical card is a different thing. Open the app at handover so we can see it live. If you expect weak signal at the airport, download the document inside the app before you land.
Visiting From Another Country?
Carry your home driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP). The IDP is the bit people forget. Your own motoring authority issues it before you travel, and it cannot be arranged after you have landed in Goa. If you are already here without one, book a car with a driver instead. We run those too, and the long roads to the south are quite pleasant from the passenger seat.
Your passport is the photo ID in this case. Check the expiry date on your licence before you fly, because an expired licence is not a licence, even by a week.
The Deposit, in Plain Words
Every self drive rental in Goa takes a security deposit. Ours is refundable in full when the car comes back the way it went out, at the same fuel level. It is higher on the luxury cars than on a hatchback, and we would rather tell you the exact amount on the confirmation call than surprise you at the door, so ask. Pay it by UPI if you can: the refund is quick and you have a timestamped record on both sides.
What Is Not Needed
People ask about these often enough that they are worth listing.
- A second ID for a second driver. Anyone who drives the car needs a valid licence, but we only need the ID of the person booking.
- A hotel booking. We deliver to villas, hostels and friends' houses just as happily, anywhere in Goa, including both airports.
- A return flight or train ticket. We do not ask for one.
- A Goa address. The only address rule is that the car stays inside Goa; the permit does not cover Maharashtra or Karnataka.
What If Something Is Missing at Handover?
Licence at home. Pull the record into DigiLocker or mParivahan on your phone. It takes a few minutes if your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number, and a family member can read you the licence number if you do not know it.
Passport in the hotel safe. We will wait, or deliver the car to the hotel instead. Free delivery covers every part of Goa, so moving the handover point is no trouble.
Deposit short. UPI works from any Indian bank account, and card and cash are accepted too.
The one thing we cannot fix is no licence at all. In that case the trip still happens, with one of our drivers at the wheel. Before you book, it is also worth reading our list of what to check before renting a car in Goa.
