October and November are the shoulder weeks between the last rain and the first Christmas crowd: the beaches reopen, the shacks go back up, the roads are the easiest of the year, and the car you want is easier to get than in December. Here is what is open and when, the 2026 dates that fill the roads, and how to drive.
Quick answer
Second half of October onwards for dry weather and open shacks. Watch Narkasur night (7 November 2026), Diwali (Sunday 8 November 2026) and IFFI in Panjim (20 to 28 November 2026). Early October roads can still hold monsoon potholes; by November the driving is at its best.
What Does the Weather Do in October and November?
The monsoon usually pulls out of Goa during October. The first week or two can still bring a late shower, sometimes a heavy one, and the air is thick and warm by afternoon. By the second half of the month the sky clears and mostly stays clear. November is the month locals like best: dry, bright, a breeze off the sea in the evening, and the fields still green from the rain. If you have children or parents who wilt in the heat, November is kinder than April.
What Is Open, and When?
| What | Early October | Late October and November |
|---|---|---|
| Beach shacks | Some trading, some still a pile of bamboo | The Candolim to Baga strip is largely up |
| Swimming and water sports | Red flags where the sea is still rough | Lifeguards ease the flags as the sea calms; water sports counters follow |
| Dudhsagar jeeps | Usually still closed after the monsoon | Jeep trips from the forest entry point normally resume during October; check before you go |
| Anjuna flea market, Arpora Saturday market | Starting up as the season builds | Running; confirm the day before you drive across |
| Casinos, clubs, river cruises | Open all year | Open all year |
The shacks are taken down every monsoon and rebuilt for the season. The Goan reported in June 2026 that the state had extended its existing beach shack policy for the 2026 to 2027 season, with the tourism department aiming to have operators ready before September, so most of the strip should be trading by the time the weather clears. Dudhsagar is the other thing people ask about: private cars stop at the forest entry point at Mollem and the last stretch is by jeeps registered with the Forest Department, which restart once the river drops after the rains. Arrangements change year to year, so check before you build a day around it.
Which Three Dates Matter in 2026?
Narkasur, the night of 7 November 2026. Goa's own Diwali eve. Villages build giant effigies of the demon Narakasura, some of them several storeys high, parade them through the night and burn them before dawn. Panjim, Mapusa, Margao and Ponda are where you see the big ones, and the roads around them are closed or crawling from late evening. Drive out to see them, park early, and expect to get home very late. Diwali itself falls on Sunday 8 November in 2026, which means shops shut and the beaches fill with Goan families.
The Diwali holidays. School holidays around Diwali bring the first real crowd of the season by road, mostly into North Goa, and 7 seaters and automatics are the first cars asked for that week. Send your dates early if you need one.
IFFI, 20 to 28 November 2026. The 57th International Film Festival of India runs in Panjim on those dates, according to the festival's own site and a Prasar Bharati news report from October 2026. Good fun if you are in the city: screenings, the opening day parade, food stalls along the riverside. Hard work if you want to park anywhere near Campal or the Inox on those nine days. Stay in Panjim and walk, or stay on the coast and treat Panjim as an evening visit by car, parked away from the venues. Our Panjim page has more on parking in the city.
What Is Driving Like in These Months?
Early October roads can still have monsoon potholes, and the village lanes around Assagao and Siolim hold water in the dips, so slow down where the road is dark. Overhanging trees drop branches in the last storms. By November most of it is patched and the driving is the easiest of the year, with none of the December crush. It is also the best window for the hill roads, Cabo de Rama and the Mollem ghat, before the dry heat and the traffic arrive. If you want a Thar with the roof off, this is when to have it. Our South Goa day trip route suits these weeks well.
Who Do These Months Suit?
Couples who want the shacks without the queue. Families with children under school age. Parents and grandparents who do not do well in the April heat. Anyone whose office will not sign off a Christmas week. It does not suit people who want the New Year party, because there is no party in November, and that is rather the point.
