Car Rental in South Goa

South Goa is where people come for space: long, quiet beaches, resorts with gardens running down to the sand, and villages where the evening traffic is a few scooters and a bus. The catch is distance. The resorts are spread along the coast, Margao is the only big town, and the beaches you hear about, Palolem and Agonda, are in Canacona, roughly 40 km south of Margao. Taxis wait at the resort gate and charge by the trip, and village buses stop early in the evening. A car of your own is what turns a resort stay into a holiday that reaches past the resort.

Which Car Suits South Goa?

• Compact SUV (Creta, Venue): a good fit for most couples and families of four here. Four people, the bags, and the run down to Palolem in comfort.
• 7 Seater (Ertiga, Innova): families and groups staying at the Varca and Cavelossim resorts, and anyone collecting several people from the airport.
• Economy Hatchback (Baleno, i20): a couple at Colva or Benaulim who mostly drive into Margao and along the coast.
• Thar: friends heading for the southern beaches and the clifftop roads round Cabo de Rama.
• Luxury: resort weddings and anniversaries in the Varca to Cavelossim belt.

Flying In? Dabolim Is the South Goa Airport

Dabolim (GOI) sits in South Goa near Vasco da Gama, and the Majorda to Colva resort belt is close by. Mopa (GOX) is far up in the north of the state, so if you land there, a car waiting at arrivals makes the long drive down practical. Driving in South Goa: What Is Different

• Fill up before you head south. Petrol pumps are further apart past Margao, so start the Palolem run with a good tank.
• Plan the drive back in daylight. The roads south of Margao run through hills and forest, with long dark stretches. Our South Goa day trip guide marks the two hill roads to avoid after dark.
• Parking is easier. Outside Christmas and New Year week, beach parking at Colva, Benaulim and Majorda is far easier than in Calangute or Baga.
• Village roads are narrow. Lanes between the paddy fields are often single track; give way at the wider points and watch for cattle in the evening.

Staying in North Goa but Spending Days in the South?
