Quick answer
Tripurari Poornima is Goa's state boat festival, held on the Valvanti river at Vithalapur, Sanquelim (Sankhali). Incredible India lists it for 24 November 2026. Last year the programme started at 7 pm and the boats were on the water from 10:30 pm to midnight, so plan for a drive back after midnight.
When Is Tripurari Poornima 2026?
The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India page lists the festival at Sankhali on 24 November 2026. Goa Tourism's 2026 to 2027 state festival calendar gives only the month, November, and marks dates as tentative.
The state usually confirms the date shortly before. In 2025, the government's notice dated 4 November set the festival for 5 November. In 2024, the notice dated 7 November set it for 15 November. Look for the Directorate of Information and Publicity notice in the days before you drive.
24 November falls in the middle of IFFI week, so Panjim will be busy if your route passes through it. See our guide to IFFI Goa 2026 by car.
What Happens at the Boat Festival?
In 2025, the festivities began at 7 pm with a procession of Lord Shree Krishna, followed by a cultural programme from 7:30 pm, and the handcrafted, eco-friendly boats were displayed on the Valvanti from 10:30 pm to midnight.
Last year, 26 boats from across the state took part and more than 8,000 people came to watch, according to the government's results notice. The evening also included lamps floated on the river, traditional saranga lanterns released into the sky, the burning of a Tripurasur effigy and a Dashavatari drama.
The roots are simple. The Goan reported in 2020 that villagers once floated earthen lamps in cups made of thick dry leaves on the river, and over the years this grew into a boat festival.
How Do You Get to Vithalapur by Car?
Set your maps to the Shree Vitthal temple at Vithalapur, Sanquelim. The government's notices place the festival on the banks of the Valvanti at Vitthalapur, Sankhali. Sanquelim is inland, in Bicholim taluka, well away from the beach belt.
- From Mapusa. Sanquelim lies inland to the east, away from the beach traffic, so if you are staying in or near Mapusa you are among the better placed visitors. See car rental in Mapusa.
- From Thivim station. Arriving by train on the day? Collect the car at the station and drive straight over. See self drive cars at Thivim.
- From South Goa. A long drive there and a longer one back after midnight. Consider staying in North Goa that night.
We are not putting a time on the drive. The last stretch slows down as thousands of people head for the same riverbank before the 7 pm procession.
Where Do You Park at Vithalapur?
When we checked on 3 November 2026, no parking or traffic plan for this year's festival had been published. Until one appears, these habits help:
- Arrive before 7 pm. Last year's programme started then, and the best spots go first.
- Follow the volunteers and police. Park where they point, even if it means a longer walk.
- Keep gates and lanes clear. Vithalapur is a village. Residents need to get in and out too.
- Park nose out. You will be leaving in the dark with everyone else.
- Note a landmark. Lit-up streets look different at midnight.
A smaller car is easier here. An Economy Hatchback fits the gaps that open up on village roads.
What Is the Night Drive Back Like?
If you stay for the boats, you will be leaving after midnight, at the same moment as most of the crowd. Plan for it:
- Fill up before you go. Don't count on finding a petrol pump open on the way back.
- Download offline maps. Signal can drop on inland roads.
- Let the first wave go. Ten quiet minutes at the car can save half an hour in a queue.
- Watch the road edges. People walk home and two-wheelers pull out from every lane after the festival.
- Choose a driver who isn't drinking. Decide before you leave, not at midnight.
- Charge your phone and keep our number saved in case you need help on the road.
If an early start matters the next day, staying near Mapusa or Thivim keeps the night drive shorter.
Which Car Suits the Boat Festival?
A couple or a pair of friends will find an Economy Hatchback easiest to park. A family with children who will fall asleep on the way back is better off in a 7 Seater, with room to stretch out and space in the boot for jackets and a picnic.
Is There Anything Else to See That Night?
The Vithalapur celebration is the state-level one, but not the only one. The Goan reported in 2020 that Tripurari Poornima is also marked at the Saptakoteshwar temple in Narvem, the Santeri temple in Nanoda, the Shantadurga temple at Gaunkar wada and at Mayem Lake. In 2024, GTDC ran special coaches to the festival from Panaji, Miramar and Mapusa, Live News Goa reported, so check whether it does in 2026 if you would rather not drive.
